Wing Chun - A modern martial art

Wing Chun Kuen, famously known as Wing Chun, is a category of martial arts originated from china, the land of greatest warriors and martial artists. Wing Chun is a concept of martial arts, which is based on the southern Chinese kung fu style. It is a form of martial arts with the primary purpose of self-defense, just like other categories of martial arts. Technically, it is a self-defense mechanism focusing on the quick movement of arms and using strong legs to humble your opponents.

The art excels in the close range, utilizing striking, trapping, and low kicking. It does not depend on physical fitness and ability but expresses the use of leverage to control opponent’s center of gravity. This Chinese martial art permits a person of small, weak stature to overcome a large, strong opponent There are two basic ingredients of Wing Chun, and they are softness and performance of the Wing Chun technique.

Relaxation is a very vital factor in Wing Chun. Our Martial Arts Scottsdale academy we practice all the traditional principles, training and forms along with the Integrative forms and training.

Wing Chun- A Legend of Legends

The history of Wing Chun is “rich” as other forms of martial arts. As the legend says, Wing Chun was first developed by Ng Mui  (one of the famous “legendary five elders”). It is said that she taught this art to one of her students, Yim Win-Chun, to weaponize her for self-defense against external hostility or unwanted advances. Later, this form of martial arts was named after that student.

Ip Man, one of the greatest Wing Chun martial artists in history, described Wing Chun as a “soft” or relaxed form of martial arts. According to him, it is an art of feeling your opponent’s movement while staying calm or relaxed and preserving your strength to fight back, just like the flexibility of bamboos.

Characteristics of Wing Chun

Wing Chun favors a generally high, limited position with the elbows near the body. In this stance, arms are, for the most part, situated over the vitals of the centerline with turns in a vertical “wu sau” position, also known as “securing hand” position. Wing Chun training provides the practitioner with choices of skillfulness based on laws of Gravity, Time, Space, and Energy.

This style positions the specialist to make promptly positioned blocks and quick-moving hits to essential striking focus down the focal point of the body; neck, chest, stomach, and crotch. Moving or turning within a position is done on the balls, heels, or center of the foot, contingent upon lineage. However, some styles of Wing Chun do not encourage the use of high kicks as it can increase the chances of counter-attacks on the stomach.
